August 30 through October 11 [NO CLASS ON SEPTEMBER 6]

WATERCOLOR IN ACTION – Immerse Yourself!
6:30 pm to 8:30 pm
Instructor: Melisa Adkison
Non-members $115; MarinMOCA members $98

No wishy-washy watercolors here! Learn to paint intense, glowing colors and avoid "muddy" washed-out tones.

Melissa will show you how to mix clean and vibrant colors, both on the palette and wet-into-wet techniques.

Beginners will work on the basic techniques: wet-into-wet, mixing color, washes and just familiarizing themselves with the medium.

Experienced students will cover more advanced techniques and work from studio still life. Students will be encouraged to work on their own projects and consult with the instructor.

A materials list will be provided at registration and discussed at the first class. Students provide their own materials and should bring whatever watercolor supplies they have to the first class. Serious students ages 16 and 17 will be considered.

Melissa is a signature member of various watercolor societies including California Watercolor Association, National Watercolor Society and the San Diego Watercolor Society. A graduate of Fine Arts at UC Santa Barbara, Melissa has been painting professionally since 1985. She paints in most media, but specializes in water media. She has been a consistent award winner throughout her career, having received awards at juried shows including the Watercolor USA, Rocky Mountain National Watercolor Exhibition, the California State Fair, the Triton Art Museum (Santa Clara, CA) biennial Statewide Annual Art Show, the Grand Junction National Art Exhibition, the Central City Art Festival and the Longmont Art Show. She has been published in the book Best of Watercolor: Composition and in the national magazine Watercolor Artist. Please visit Melissa’s web site to view her work – www.theartistmelissa.com.

Ceramic Sculpture
6 pm to 9 pm
Instructor:  Randy Pottenger
Non-members $275; Members $245 [includes $85 materials fee]
Summer classes open to youth ages 12 and up.

Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium and what you can create from a lump of clay is almost limitless. In this class we explore a variety hand building methods and design concepts that will help students achieve their goals. A variety of texturing methods, surface treatments and glazing possibilities will be presented. If you’ve been frustrated with traditional throwing methods, come and see what you can do with the “other way” of working with clay.
Also offered are methods for creating tall ceramic structures composed of small modular components threaded over a central support. Mid-range stoneware clay and glazes will be used, making the structure suitable indoor or outdoor display.

Beginning and advanced students welcome. Summer classes open to youth ages 12 and up.
Randy received her Master’s degree in Design in Fiber Sculpture from San Francisco State University in the late ‘70s. She worked professionally as a typesetter and graphic designer in the printing industry until stopping to raise a family. For the past 20 years Randy has concentrated on the various aspects of hand-built stoneware ceramics. Her pieces are in many private collections and have been sold nationwide through the Discovery Channel Stores. Randy’s studio is located at the Novato Arts Center, Building 500, Studio104.

NO CLASSES IN AUGUST

The Portrait and the Figure
10 am to 1 pm
Instructor: Kathleen Lack

Non-members $175; Members $150. Plus model fee not to exceed $35.

NEW: This class now offers a drop in option, space permitting. Per session fees by check or in cash only. Non-members $50; Members $45. Plus $5 model fee.  All drop in fees paid to instructor at the beginning of the session. Class size limited to 12.

Drawing and painting from a live model provides the opportunity to capture the attitude and emotion of the subject in a moment of time. The nuances of light, reflections and shadows on the form are defining and inspirational. You will receive individualized instruction in composition, color, proportions and the use of your medium of choice.  Beginners and advanced students are welcome.

Kathleen's inspiration to paint and draw people is constant. When she observes people, she says "I am seeing a soft golden hue against the face, an expression of emotional involvement when playing the cello, the strong morning sunlight creating magical contours over a child’s face - and I am compelled to capture that on canvas." To her, it is the intensity of that moment, the graceful body positions, the light, shadows, and colors that need to be rendered. See more of Kathleen's work at www.kathleenlack.com
