Martinez, CA
I am an artist who likes to think that my multi-discipline work sits on the rhetorical fence between outsider and insider art. I will claim that this work is a hybrid of sophisticated naivety.
I think of myself as a kind of Merlin as I create an artistic alchemy by first reclaiming traditional arts and crafts methods and blending them with solid contemporary fine art practices overseen by heavy doses of conceptual thinking.
I was born in San Francisco where I lived 8 years until my family moved to Martinez where I still live and work. I have been a multi-disciplined artist since childhood. I painted, drew comics, made movies, wrote stories, put on puppet shows and engaged in all aspects of the theatre. What I do today hasn’t changed much. My art is still an ongoing investigation of medium, style and discipline, that is sparked by my creative whim which nourishes on inspirational things such as pop culture, nature, art history and crafts.
I attended CCA (when it was known as the California College of Arts and Crafts, or CCAC) and graduated with both a BFA and MFA from this fine institution (1982,1987). From that time I had exhibited my artwork in solo and group shows in venues ranging from bar poolrooms to alternative spaces to galleries to museums.
For ten years, (1996-2006), sculptor Walter Robinson and I formed Tag Team, a multi- media collaboration. Tag Team had solo exhibitions at the Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco and Pierogi in Brooklyn as well as been in group shows nationwide.
