Create beautiful papier maché sculptures in this two-day workshop as you explore forms, shapes, and surfaces.

In this workshop you will be guided through a material exploration of Ali Vaughan's papier maché and wax process, using sculpture materials from Douglas and Sturgess. You will create forms by manipulating pieces of cardboard and glue, exploring the ways that cardboard can provide a fast and easy entry point into exploring sculptural concepts of form and space.

On the second day of the course you will explore different ways to address the surfaces of your sculptures using paint, pigment, wax, and other materials, an opportunity to get "painterly" with sculpture and explore the way surface and form can interact in an artwork.

Ali Vaughan is an artist based in Richmond, California. She was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, and received dual B.A. degrees in Art Practice with Honors and Art History from Stanford University in 2019. She regularly works between the mediums of oil painting, drawing, and sculpture. Through process-based abstraction, her work examines notions of place and identity. She has shown work at spaces including the de Young Museum, the Stanford Art Gallery, Coulter Art Gallery, and RAM Gallery.
