Mexican Sugar Skulls: History and Creation

Saturday, September 21; 11am to 1:30pm

Instructor: Diego Marcial Rios
Hand paint and decorate a Mexican sugar skull steeped in the rich cultural history of Mexico.
 
Brief Historical Lecture: Summary of the origin of sugar art in Italian culture and how this unique medium was introduced to native people of North America.
 
Demonstration: Learn how to make a colorful piece of art influenced by Mexican culture. You will learn the ingredients and application techniques necessary to decorate a sugar skull. You will also learn how to make your own simple molds out of silicon.
 
Hand Decorate a Sugar Skull: Roll up your sleeves and decorate your own unique work. Premade sugar skulls and all decorations will be provided for this workshop.
 
Instructor: Diego Marcial Rios received a B.F.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has exhibited his work at the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicato; Sonoma Art Center; and Expressions Art Gallery, Berkeley.

Cancellation Policy: Fees are due at time of registration. You may cancel up to one (1) week prior to start of class/workshop and the fee, less $25 for processing, will be refunded to you. Should MarinMOCA cancel a class/workshop, you will receive a full refund.

Should you cancel less than one (1) week prior to a class or workshop begins, you will not receive a refund of any portion of your registration fee. There are no refunds for individual classes that are missed within a monthly series.
