Mexican Sugar Skulls - History and Creation

Saturday, October 4; 11am to 1pm

Instructor: Diego Marcial Rios

Hand paint and decorate a Mexican sugar skull steeped in the rich cultural history of Mexico.

History: You will be treated to a brief historical lecture summarizing the origin of sugar art in Italian culture and how this unique medium was introduced to native peoples of North America.

Demonstration: You will learn the ingredients and application techniques necessary to decorate a sugar skull. Then you will roll up your sleeves and decorate your own unique piece. Pre-made sugar skulls and all decorations will be provided for you.

Instructor: Diego Marcial Rios received a B.F.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. and an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has exhibited his work at the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicato; Sonoma Art Center; and Expressions Art Gallery, Berkeley.
