Lauren Jade Szabo: As Above, So Below

Live Performance at the reception of As Above, So Below in collaboration with dance artist Morgan Olson and vocal artist Rowan Katz

Focusing on our relationships to the environment, As Above, So Below revels in the complexity of the ever-changing hybridized landscape and seascape. Szabo explores visual symptoms of perceived separation of humankind and nature through realist paintings and site-specific dance collaborations.

About the performing artists:

Rowan Katz is a vocalist, songwriter, physical theater artist, facilitator and somatic voice educator. Their work most often concerns themes of gender expression and identity, trauma healing, queerness, Jewish diaspora, recovery, abolition, rematriation, grief, and mysticism. Touted as a powerhouse vocalist and performer, Rowan uses performance and education as a way to dismantle shame and foster expression, intimacy, critical engagement, and embodied connection in community. Recent credits include "Songs of Truth: Holocaust Awareness Concert and Conversation" with the Golden Gate Symphony (soloist, coordinator), Free Key Choir (soloist, composer, section leader), HBO's "Scavengers Reign" (vocalist), Noise Pop's "Summer of Music" series, THEYFRIEND Festival (featured artist), and Glenview Classical Series (featured artist). Rowan also teaches workshops on singing as a tool of political resistance and healing in the East Bay and abroad, and regularly performs lay-cantorial work and services. 

Morgan Olson was born and raised in Southern California. She began her dance training at a local ballet school in Lake Arrowhead, CA. She attended summer intensives such as American Ballet Theatre and Philadelphia Ballet. Morgan attended Idyllwild Arts Academy on scholarship for all four years of high school. There she studied Ballet, Modern, Jazz and Dance Composition, as well as performed in various classical and contemporary repertory pieces. Morgan graduated from Idyllwild Arts in 2021 with scholastic honors and a certification in the arts (dance). Morgan now lives full time in Marin and has begun her career as a dance instructor and arts administrator at Stapleton School of the Performing Arts. She also teaches dance under the direction of Alan Scofield with Kiddo! Mill Valley Schools Community Foundation, bringing dance education into local elementary schools. Morgan is incredibly honored to share her knowledge and love for dance with the next generation of aspiring artists.
