I paint, I draw, I assemble, I take photos, I design, I am a seeker of what’s beneath, hidden and meaningful. My work lives in color and line, making marks that define, blur and speak to me as images appear and disappear in a layered composition. Working quickly and intuitively, I’m inspired by rich, encaustic paint and the feel of a fluid pen, expressions revealed through my hand, which my head has yet to discover.
I grew up in Chicago, where architecture is king and my love of design became my 9-5. Steel, glass, stone and brick united in geometry, shaped my sense of place. However, Illinois will always be where the prairie fields pull me home.
For five years I lived in China, where I learned the language and know the pulse of a city whose movement is as swift as a calligraphy stroke. Today this culture lives in me strong like bamboo.
Now I live in San Francisco, where for 25 years I’ve been learning from the energy of the streets. Birthplace of the Beats and the counterculture, ideas live in small pockets of the city when I listen and look. I find solitude in the redwoods and the ocean: the church where my imagination and peace of mind meet. Pursuing art has taken courage and time. One artist I admire, John Cage, said it best: begin anywhere
